Tattler Lids: Keeping out the Junk

Rhonda asks:

I was wondering if the tattler lids would keep out the junk in the air like the metal lids would? I do like them and the fact you can reuse is a plus. Just wondering, you know how plastic is.

Great question, because plastic has had such a bad rap on occasion.  And I agree some plastics are not made for using with food.  But Tattlers are specifically made to be safe with your home canning.

Here is a quote from the website.

TATTLER Reusable Plastic Canning Lids are manufactured using a plastic compound that is safe for direct contact with food products.  We utilize an FDA and USDA approved, food grade product known as Polyoxymethylene Copolymer (POM) or Acetal Copolymer.

See this page for more info on Tattler lid safety.

Tattler lids are perfectly safe and since the seals have been known to be intact for years… yes, they must keep out the “junk in the air”.

Here are some pictures of foods that were sealed back in 1990!  If anything were seeping through the seal would have been broken long ago.  These lids are air tight.

Maple Syrup sealed in 1990. Seal is still tight!

Peaches sealed in 1990. Peaches looking a little sad… but the seal is still intact.

Now please don’t take this as an endorsement to eat foods that were canned over 20 years ago. That is a whole new post!

I’d probably not want to eat those peaches. But! These images do demonstrate the longevity of the seals these lids produce.

Check these out too.
